When Is Denture Repair Necessary?

Denture adjustments and repairs will likely be needed at some point or another throughout the time of wearing the piece. Dentures are extremely strong and reliable; however, accidents do happen, and wear and tear can occur over time. It can be difficult to know when a repair is needed, which is why reviewing the following information can be helpful.

Denture repairs

Outlined below are a few things that may indicate a need for a denture repair

Cracks or chips

Denture pieces are extremely strong in the mouth, but at the same time they can be delicate. The materials that make up the denture piece are nylon and plastic, which can easily break if dropped. If the wearer drops the dentures or is too rough with them, they may crack, which can be detrimental. A crack can become serious and result in a need for a denture repair or even replacement.

Additionally, if a denture piece is dropped, it may chip, which can put the entire mouth at risk. Chipped edges may be sharp, which could cut soft tissues within the mouth. Whether a chip or crack occurs, it is necessary to have a dentist take a look to determine what type of denture repair is needed.

Worn base

A common problem that comes up with dentures is that the base can become worn. The base of a denture piece is prone to wear because it rubs up against multiple parts of the mouth. When it does become worn, it is necessary to undergo a denture repair known as a rebase.

Broken or worn artificial teeth

The artificial teeth that are attached to the denture piece can become damaged over time. It is important to remember that dentures are not natural teeth, which means they are prone to wear and tear. The artificial teeth can become worn from chewing and grinding up food. Worn artificial teeth can result in a need for denture repair. The repair can ensure that the artificial teeth are fixed so that they work properly.

Outside of wear and tear, the artificial teeth of a denture piece can break off. When the teeth do break off, eating, speaking, and smiling may not be achievable as normal. A denture repair is always needed when any part of the denture breaks.

Bad fit

Over time, the mouth can change shape, which can result in a poorly fitting denture. Dentures that do not fit properly can make it difficult for the wearer to eat, smile, and speak comfortably. When the fit is poor, a denture repair may be needed in order to make it fit properly. The dentist may send the piece off to a dental lab to be refitted.
