As a local kids dentist, Marieve Rodriguez DMD knows how important it is to bring children in for regular dental care.  Cavities are incredibly common in children.  So much so that they are considered to be a major infectious disease according to the CDC. How to brush properly.

Most parents are aware that it is important to have their children brush their teeth for two minutes at a time, twice a day.  Few realize, however, the importance of proper brushing.  The toothbrush should start at the gum line and move in a circular pattern, pushing plaque towards the center of the mouth.  We also recommend dividing the mouth into four quadrants and brushing each one for thirty seconds for the best possible clean.  Your child should also brush with a fluoride toothpaste since this will help to strengthen their teeth.  Combined with a new brush every three months, this will aid in keeping their teeth healthy.

Remember to floss.

As a kids dentist, Marieve Rodriguez DMD reminds patients about the importance of daily flossing. This is something that a lot of children avoid doing, but it is critical to oral health.  Food particles and plaque can easily become trapped in between teeth, and as they do, cavities can form.  Flossing is the best way to combat this. Since using a string of floss is difficult for children, we recommend using a flossing tool instead.  They are easy to hold, and even young children enjoy using them.  Just pick up a pack at the local drugstore.

Drink water.

After your kids are done brushing their teeth for the night, give them water to drink.  Baby bottle tooth decay is a common condition that impacts toddlers and young children that take milk or juice to bed. The sugar in these drinks sits on the teeth throughout the night and bacteria feeds on it.  This creates a dangerous environment that increases the risk of getting cavities.  We also recommend drinking more water than anything else throughout the day since this is good for staying hydrated and healthy for your teeth.

Eat healthy.

What your child eats will influence both their oral and physical health.  In our kids dentist office, Marieve Rodriguez DMD will take the time to provide tips for healthy eating and to encourage your child to improve their diet.  Some foods to try are crunchy vegetables, nuts, lean protein, green leafy vegetables, and dairy products like cheese and yogurt.
